A HUD with a health bar and score

A HUD shows the player’s state over the game: health, score, coins. There are two ways to make one, and this page does both from the same data:

 • UI nodes you lay out in the editor (a ProgressBar and a RichText), with a small script that copies the values in. Easy to arrange and theme; one per scene.
 • A global that draws: a global script’s draw hook draws over every scene, in screen space. Nothing to place; it’s all code. The demo project’s HUD (scripts/hud.odin) is one.

Both read a PlayerStats global, which the rest of the game changes.

scripts/player_stats.odin
package scripts
import e "engine:."
/*
PlayerStats: a global script (Project Settings > Globals). The player's health and score, for
every scene. The game's scripts change them; the HUD shows them.
*/
PlayerStats :: struct {
using script: e.Script,
maxHealth: int `export:"default=5 min=1 max=20"`,
health: int,
score: int,
}
// Takes health (never below 0); true when it's all gone
PlayerStats_Damage :: proc(self: ^PlayerStats, amount: int) -> bool {
self.health = max(self.health - amount, 0)
return self.health == 0
}
@(init)
register_PlayerStats :: proc "contextless" () {
e.Script_Register(PlayerStats, {
ready = proc(self: ^PlayerStats) {
self.health = self.maxHealth
},
})
}
 1. Add Node > Panel named HUD: Anchor Top_Left, Layout Column. If the scene has a camera, put the HUD on a layer ticked as a Screen layer in the scene’s settings, so it doesn’t scroll away (UI and the camera).
 2. Inside it, Add Node > ProgressBar named Health (set its width in the inspector), and Add Node > RichText named Score.
 3. Give HUD the HudPanel script. Its Health and Score fields find the two by name.

package scripts
import "core:fmt"
import e "engine:."
import sdl "vendor:sdl3"
/*
HudPanel: on a Panel with a ProgressBar "Health" and a RichText "Score" inside. Copies the
PlayerStats global into them when the values change.
*/
HudPanel :: struct {
using script: e.Script,
health: ^e.ProgressBar `export:"default=Health"`,
score: ^e.RichText `export:"default=Score"`,
// What's shown now (-1: nothing yet)
shownScore: int,
}
@(init)
register_HudPanel :: proc "contextless" () {
e.Script_Register(HudPanel, {
ready = proc(self: ^HudPanel) {
self.shownScore = -1
},
update = proc(self: ^HudPanel, _: []sdl.Event, _: f64) {
stats := e.Global(PlayerStats)
if stats == nil do return
if self.health != nil {
self.health.settings.maxValue = f32(stats.maxHealth)
e.ProgressBar_SetValue(self.health, f32(stats.health))
}
// Control_SetText copies the text into the control: only when it changes
if self.score != nil && stats.score != self.shownScore {
self.shownScore = stats.score
e.Control_SetText(self.score, fmt.tprintf("Score %d", stats.score))
}
},
})
}
 • A global is one script for the whole game, not attached to a node, listed in Project Settings > Globals (Global scripts). Other scripts change it through e.Global(PlayerStats); a hit might call PlayerStats_Damage(stats, 1).
 • UI node fields. health: ^e.ProgressBar with export:"default=Health" is a path from the script’s node: the child named Health. The engine fills it in before ready; it stays nil (with a warning in the Console) when there’s no such node of that kind.
 • e.ProgressBar_SetValue sets the bar’s value, kept inside its range (settings.minValue to settings.maxValue, 0 to 1 unless you set them).
 • RichText understands ... and .... e.Control_SetText copies the text into the control’s memory, so it’s only called on a change.
 • A global’s draw runs after the scene, in the game’s own resolution (self.game.size), whatever the window’s size. self.hidden = true skips it; sceneChanged is a good place to decide.
 • Drawing procedures take the renderer the hook receives: e.DrawRectangle, e.DrawRectangleOutline, e.DrawRoundedRectangle, e.DrawLine, e.DrawTexture, and e.DrawText / e.MeasureText with the game’s resource manager and a font (e.DEFAULT_FONT, or a FONT_ constant’s path).
 • fmt.tprintf strings last until the end of the frame: fine for drawing them in the same frame.
 • Coins with an icon, as the demo does: e.DrawTexture(renderer, e.Asset_Texture(self.game, TEXTURE_COIN), {14, 48, 64, 64}).
 • Blink the bar while health is low: skip drawing fill when int(self.game.time * 6) % 2 == 0 (game.time is the seconds the game has run).
 • Theme the UI-node HUD: select the Panel, New Theme, and change the bar’s colors in the theme (Themes).
